I’m Laura. I love sharing bookish thoughts, reviews, and commentary with others. I hope I can inspire you to read outside your comfort zone! I’m not taken in by the bestseller lists; I focus on books by and about women, books by authors from outside the U.S., prizewinners, and classics. When I read nonfiction, it’s usually memoirs or narrative nonfiction.
I have been blogging about books and reading since 2007. Reviews prior to 2010 can be found on my first blog, Musings at LiveJournal, accessible from the Years in Review page on this blog. I also founded The Complete Booker, a perpetual challenge to read all winners of the Man Booker Prize for Fiction. We read short- and long-listed works, too.
I live in southeastern Pennsylvania, near both Delaware and Maryland. I’m married with 2 daughters, and an assortment of dogs and cats. When I’m not reading, I tend my fruit & veg garden, and work to provide the best possible habitat for the wildlife living around my house and pond. I also enjoy knitting, especially socks.
About the Design
I love used books! I find it hard to pass by a used bookshop or library sale without at least seeing what’s on offer. I collect Virago Modern Classics, especially those published before 2000. I’ve been exchanging books on Paperbackswap for as long as I’ve been blogging. I’m much more into the “hunt” for older gems, than reading the latest in new fiction. I wanted a header that reflects this aspect of my reading (photo credit). The blog’s overall design uses the WordPress “Misty Lake” template.
I believe in writing honest reviews. When I come across a book I don’t like, I say so, but I also try to highlight the book’s strengths as well as its weaknesses. I also post all book reviews on Library Thing under the user name lindsacl. While I feel honored when a publisher or author contacts me to read and review books, at this time I am not accepting books for review.
This blog is a personal blog written and edited by me. I write for my own purposes. However, I may be influenced by my background, occupation, religion, political affiliation or experience.
I am compensated only with Advance Readers Editions or review copies of books provided by publicists, publishers, or authors. Although these books are provided in the hopes of a review, a review is not guaranteed, nor is the review (if it is provided) expected to be anything but an honest opinion of the book. Even though I occasionally receive compensation in the form of free books, I always give my honest opinions, findings, beliefs, or experiences on those books.
The views and opinions expressed on this blog are purely my own. This blog does not contain any content which might present a conflict of interest.
